Keratoconus is a corneal pathology that manifests in the youth and may progress until the third or fourth decade of the life. Due to potency, curvature and corneal thickness changes associated with the keratoconus progression, different visual alterations as likewise typical characteristic signs will appear. Therefore, ophthalmological examinations are necessaries in patients diagnosed with keratoconus to evaluate its progression and to plan treatment.
The treatment of the keratoconus depends on its evolution grade, although in all the situations the ophthalmologist will recommend not rub the eyes because it contributes to the ectasia progression. In a first stage when the ophthalmic lens does not improve the vision due to corneal irregular astigmatism, rigid contact lenses are an alternative option that provides good outcomes. However, with the progression of the keratoconus intrastromal corneal rings are necessaries, a technology which has experimented important innovations in the segments. Likewise, the advent of femtosecond laser has contributed to the automation of the procedure, as in the reduction of postoperative complications in the intrastromal rings surgery. Also, frequently the implant of intrastromal corneal rings in keratoconus patients is performed combined with cross-linking treatment. Precisely, this procedure also has experimented important advances with the introduction of transepithelial cross-linking with iontophoresis more recently. Nevertheless, when the different treatments don’t reduce the keratoconus progression, corneal transplant or also called keratoplasty is used as the last alternative.
