Prevention of pterygium by ultraviolet radiation exposure

» Pterygium is a common pathology in ophthalmological consultations. » If it progresses, it may invade the cornea.

In summer when temperatures are higher, is frequent go to the beach to get a tan or practice sports activities outdoor, among others… However, especially in tropical countries, on the Mediterranean coast or in the mountain when solar exposition is higher, it is necessary to protect the vision from ultraviolet radiation exposure. Precisely, visual protection is necessary due to that the energy of short wavelength ultraviolet radiation is higher and can damage the ocular structures. Concretely, when glasses with an ultraviolet filter are not used, different inflammatory pathologies in the conjunctive, as pterygium may appear, among others. For example, pterygium occurs mainly due to abnormal growth of the conjunctiva due to ultraviolet radiation overexposure, although other causes or risk factors may induce its formation. Its incidence in the population oscillates between approximately 2-3%, scientific studies report. Although in early stages pterygium no induces visual loss, if treatment is not planned may invade the central vision. If pterygium invades the cornea, will induce symptomatology associated with dry eye, as visual loss and astigmatism. To avoid the development of pterygium, ophthalmological examinations as soon as possible to diagnose and plan treatment are necessary. Concretely, different treatments have been developed to control its progression such anti-inflammatory or corticosteroids agents, drugs infiltration, and as the last option in more advanced phases surgical treatment.

"Unlike pinguecula, if pterygium progresses may invade the  cornea and inducing visual symptoms"

From deem that is necessary provide information to patients about how to prevent the development of pterygium by means of sunglasses with an ultraviolet filter.
