If homologated sunglasses not are used, the exposure to ultraviolet radiation especially in maritime places or also in high mountain can induce different conjunctival pathologies as pterygium or pinguecula mainly. In addition, pinguecula is a tumour that occurs frequently in tropical areas and in the Mediterranean, occurring with frequency in sailors. Precisely, pinguecula is a benign tumour that produces symptomatology associated with ocular dryness. Also, pinguecula is a tumour that occurs in the conjunctiva of the eyeball acquiring yellowish-brown colour, being easy observing it. Likewise, due to the elevation of the conjunctival tissue induced, it will produce an inadequate distribution of the tear on the ocular surface. Precisely, these characteristic signs of the pinguecula in the conjunctiva are easily observing them in an ophthalmological consultation by means of the slit lamp and with other diagnostic tests. However, although pterygium induces an abnormal and progressive increase of the conjunctiva decreasing visual acuity, pinguecula normally not produce irregular astigmatism or decreased visual acuity.
Although the main risk factor of the manifestation of pinguecula is the exposure to ultraviolet radiation without protection, national and international scientific studies have proved that other factors influence in their formation. Specifically, advantage age, exposure to high-temperature ovens in addition to ultraviolet radiation exposure without protection, has been proposed as the main causes that may induce the formation of pinguecula. Indeed, it is necessary to increase awareness on the protection of the skin and the vision of the exposure to ultraviolet radiation in maritime places. Nevertheless, if pinguecula is manifested, is required an exhaustive ophthalmological evaluation as a treatment plan. Concretely, to diagnose pinguecula is necessary to perform a clinical exploration of the ocular surface by means of the slit lamp, although Optical Coherence Tomography (OCT) is a device very useful to study the benign tumour. From our international project ConsultoriaVisual.com, we plan content marketing strategies in online platforms from hospitals, ophthalmological clinics and optical establishments in all Spanish speaking countries. Our strategies will allow increasing the knowledge to the population about the risk factors, prevention, diagnosis and treatment of pinguecula. Likewise, from our project we edit contents in postgraduate courses and master’s degrees from universities to academic community receive more information about the different training programs.
